Getting started
- Open Music MCP. It lives in the menu bar (the plug icon) and has no Dock icon.
- Click the icon, choose Set Up Apple Music, and allow access when macOS asks.
- Under Connect Your AI, click Copy Setup Prompt and paste it into your AI agent. The agent adds Music MCP to its own settings.
- Ask your AI to play something, for example “something calm for a late evening”.
Common questions
Which AI apps work with Music MCP?
Any app that supports MCP servers (Model Context Protocol). Agents that can edit their own settings, such as coding agents, set themselves up from the setup prompt. For other apps, open Manual Setup, pick your app and click Copy Settings. If your app isn't listed, choose Other app (HTTP) or Other app (command).
Download or App Store?
Both are the same app. The App Store version updates itself. The version you download here is signed and checked by Apple (notarized) too; it tells you in the menu when a newer version is available (Check for Updates…), and you download and replace it yourself. Use one or the other, not both.
Do I need an Apple Music subscription?
Yes, to play songs. Your AI can search the catalog without one, and the panel shows a note if your account can't play music.
Does it work with the browser or phone version of my AI?
No. Music MCP runs on your Mac and only accepts connections from it, so it works with AI apps that run on the same Mac.
Can my AI see my library?
Only if you allow it. The first time your AI wants your library, Music MCP asks you in a small window. Choose Turn On, and your AI can read your songs, playlists and recently played music to pick music you like. You can also switch Share Library & History on or off under Connect Your AI in the panel.
Can my AI create playlists?
Yes, if you allow it: Music MCP asks the first time, or you turn on Allow Library Changes under Connect Your AI. Then your AI can save a set as a playlist, add songs to your playlists, add music to your library, and love or dislike songs. It can't delete or rename anything. It's off by default.
Does music keep playing when I close my AI app?
Yes. Playback runs in Music MCP, not in your AI app. Quitting Music MCP stops it.
Troubleshooting
My AI says it can't reach Music MCP
- Check that Music MCP is running: the plug icon is in the menu bar and the panel says Ready for your AI.
- If you used Reset Access Token…, every AI app was disconnected. Paste the setup prompt, or the manual settings, into your AI apps again.
- Restart your AI app, or reload its MCP servers, after changing its settings.
Music stutters, for example on a train or over a phone hotspot
If playback in Music MCP is choppy while other apps play fine, check whether Low Data Mode is on for your connection: System Settings → Network → your connection (Wi-Fi, iPhone USB, …) → Details…. With Low Data Mode on, macOS asks apps to save data, so Music MCP buffers very little ahead and every dip in the connection becomes audible. Turn it off for smooth playback.
I can't find the icon in the menu bar
On Macs with a notch, icons that don't fit next to it are hidden. Quit a few other menu bar apps, or hold ⌘ and drag icons to make room. Also check that Music MCP is allowed in System Settings → Menu Bar.
“Set Up Apple Music” doesn't work
If you denied access earlier, macOS doesn't ask again. Click Open System Settings in the panel, or turn it on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Media & Apple Music.
My AI asks me to turn on sharing
Your AI tried to read your library or history while Share Library & History is off. Turn it on if you're happy to share, or ask for music without it.
